I love KitchenAid mixer. I had the classic 4.5 quarts before and had a lot of fun with it. Great for kneading, making scones, etc. So, when I saw the 5 quart model on sale, I jumped at the chance to purchase it. Same as before, but only bigger, right? Well, it worked great until I realized that the dough was being left at the bottom of the bowl. So, I figured it's because of the height so I lowered it a bit. Now, keep in mind that nowhere in the booklet of instruction does it tell you how much the tolerance should be. I went to their live help to get that number which is 1/16". (Another advice: Use paddle attachement for the height measurement. Dough Hook will give you falst reading) So, here I go with lower height setting. I noticed that the top part would twitch everytime it kneaded the dough. After making the dough, I found a ground up spot on the dough hook and scratch marks on the bowl. I had to replace the dough hook but fortunately, the scratch on the bowl was minor enough. So, once again, I'm trying to knead something. I thought I heard some scratching noise again, so I raised the height about a half turn. Next thing I know, I couldn't lock the head in because nothing was lining up anymore. So, here's my recommendation: Get KitchenAid for it's an awesome gadget to have. But... DO NOT TOUCH THE SETTING ONCE YOU BUY IT. I put the paddle attachment and sorta got the 1/16", but it's not the same anymore... That's a shame, though, for such a great tool. I had (have) a "B" series Kitchen Aid circa 1947-50 that works great but was not nice to look at. I recieved my new model Artisan and it is a work of art. It looks great on my counter-top (I used to put the old one away after I was done). As a mixer, nothing compares to Kitchen Aid. I have used it for mashed potatoes, cakes and pizza dough so far and it is awesome. The bowl locks in place, although don't tighten it too much-it really locks!! It is powerful and quiet. You may have to scrape the bottom of the mixing bowl with a rubber spatula to ensure you mix all of the ingredients, but that is with any mixer. And now they come in colors! I highly recommend this mixer and it is a great wedding/house gift. I still have my old one, I'm keeping that one too. It's almost 60 years old! I had my mother's slightly less powerful (than this artisan version) 5 quart mixer, which I used for over a decade till I received the cobalt blue artisan as a wedding gift 15 months ago. To be honest I had always wanted a cobalt blue one to match my kitchen -- my mother's mixer, after over 20 years of regular use (and being shipped twice across the country!), still worked perfectly.

I use my mixer a few times a week for all types of applications -- making bread, muffins, cookies, cakes, and various types of pastry. It works superbly for all my baking needs.

I have heard people criticize the shape of the bowl (and the fact that it is not a more rounded, shallow shape as with some other models/makes). I have used a large capacity professional Hobart mixer with this shape mixing bowl and I did not find that it offered any advantages whatsoever over my kitchenaid mixer. Both were equally good at mixing a variety of batters and doughs. In short, the shape of the artisan's bowl is not a problem unless you are hoping to whip up a riduculously small amount. It is perfectly adequate for all practical (read: normal or larger scale) purposes.

As for power...it is true that the machine will shake a little and get warm if you have it kneading away bread dough for an extended period of time...however, the engine will NOT burn out (I've used my mixer, beating at maximum speed, for 30+ min) and the mixer will maintain speed and consistency. I had a 10-yr old Sunbeam MixMaster that bit the dust last Christmas. The KitchenAid mixer line looks nice and is powerful, (& all the TV chefs seem to use them). So I purchased the standard version of this mixer. However, because I found the procedure to lock the mixing bowl into place quite cumbersome and awkward I exchanged it for an Artisan (I never 'used' the Standard, couldn't get the bowl in place properly). While the Artisan's bowl locks into place easier than the Standard, I sometimes must "hug" the unit to do so. I can not UNLOCK the bowl without first turning the mixer 180 degrees and then hugging the entire unit with one arm, and yanking on the bowl to release it. This procedure puts the controls in the back where I can not see them or use them safely. You can not scrape the sides of the bowl while mixing either. You must stop the mixer, lift up the motor and beater mount (no small feat since this mixer is HEAVY), scrape and then reposition everything to continue. This is a VERY clumsy process. I guess you could just leave the stuff that doesn't get mixed into your creation hanging on the side of the bowl, but to do so will ruin most cakes & cookies. Being left handed, I have adapted to the right-handed world in a lot of ways, (I use a right handed scissors even), however, this machine is AWFUL. This stand mixer is the absolute worst mixer anyone could purchase. I purchased this mixer with high expectations only to find myself packing it up to take it back where I purchased it.
