The first time I used it, the switch sprang back to the "on" position when I turned it off. I thought I'd fumbled it,so I made no notice of it. They can't handle double batches of 100% whole wheat bread. They can't handle the food grinder attachment for grinding wheat sprouts, or making whole wheat pasta. At first it handles dough beautifully, but the gears start 'popping' after a year or so, and by then your warranty is expired. Having used a smaller Kitchen Aid mixer for 13 years, I did not worry about changing my dough recipes. I didn't see in their instructions that I could not use 100% whole wheat until it was too late. It's very discouraging to spend $400 for a mixer that can't do any more than the smaller, less expensive, models. These are NOT heavy duty mixers. You have to 'baby' them more than the smaller mixers. BEWARE wheat-savvy-cooks...This is NOT the appliance for you. The repair center says it will be a minimum of $75 or so to fix our gears. The easy twist locks keep the mixer stationary throughout your preparation, and the same principles are at work with the attachments. It is a relief that there are no buttons to press, and the attachments stay put until you're ready to dislodge them. Keep in mind that it is a relatively heavy appliance at 23 pounds with the mixer head a bit daunting if you are in a hurry to move ingredients in and out of the bowl. I'm an avid baker, I love making everything from cookies to cakes. The kitchenaide is about the only tool i need. I grew up with my mother having one and loving it. In fact, she still has hers that she received as a gift from my father in the mid 90s. Her attachments (the whisk and such) broke down before the machine or bowl did, might have something to do with her putting them in the dishwasher. I love mine just as I loved hers. It's a beautiful piece of machinery. However, if you really want it to last a long time, you've got to invest in the "HEAVY DUTY" edition. In order to compete with the cheaper devices, I guess the company had to make a "bottom line" edition. I've never personally known anyone who wasn't satisfied with their machine. I love all kitchenaide appliances and utensils and would recommend them to anyone. If your machine breaks down I know kitchenaide has a warranty of some sort.
