After studying consumer reviews (online and magazine), I purchased the KitchenAid Artisan stand mixer. It's so much more powerful and better designed than the one it replaced, but my first experience was disappointing. I needed to make a meringe using two eggs. The wire whip beater just skimmed over the top of the whites and didn't begin to beat them. According to the manual, the factory setting for the beater height sometimes needs to be raised so that the flat beater doesn't hit the side of the bowl. My problem was the opposite, so, using a flathead screwdriver, I had to turn the screw to lower the beater height so that the wire whip would reach egg whites, then check the flat beater to make sure that it would still clear the side of the bowl! No one has ever mentioned this, but I'm sure I'm not unique. The only con is that it is extremely heavy. You really need to keep it out on the counter or you probably won't use it. Now that a few months have passed and much use here is why I would like to re-do this review:
1. The mixer does NOT come with a dough hook!
2. The whisk-type beater intended for egg whites, cake batter, etc., is EXTREMELY small. It does not actually meet with either the sides or the bottom of the bowl!!! I couldn't believe it. My old Kitchenaid beater makes noise because it leaves barely a molecule of eggwhite between the beater and the bowl. This one takes forever to whip egg whites because the beater does not EVER touch the bowl.

I know we probable don't need another review for this Kitchen Aid mixer, but, I just have to say how much I love mine. My husband calls it "The Slavemaker". I was a little disapointed with it in the biginning because you needed to stop and scrape the bowl all the time. Then I found the "Sideswipe" beater, and that totally fixed that problem. So,sure, you're thinking, another gadget. But hey, if you got this thing as a gift or on some screaming deal like I did, what's another $25 bucks? If you love to cook, you probably have every other gadget in the world anyway, so just buck up and get one more and learn to love you mixer. I can see from some of the other reviews that some people got lemons when they got their kitchen aid, so there is always a risk that the manufacturer let one through without the required quality control, but I think you can see from the many, many who got good ones, that that is not the general rule.
My Kitchen Aid is a real workhorse and I use it all the time. I have had it for over three years and have never had a hiccup with it.
You can get a Sideswipe or something similar on Amazon or on a website, and it really puts your machine right, you,ll never have to stop and scrape again. I loved the fact that it came with a recipe book which clarified that because the motor is so powerful some of the mixing times would be shorter than those for a regular mixer. I have only used this mixer a few times. I bought it because I am gluten intolerant and when I use a had mixer to mix gluten free doughs they tend to climb up they beaters making a mess all over the bottom of my mixer unless I stop mixing every couple of seconds to scrape the dough back down...annoying! I love the large size of this, especially when it comes to large family gatherings. We have had this at least two years and have never stressed the motor or had any issues with it working. I like the plastic that goes around the top of the mixing bowl that allows me to add ingredients as it is mixing without making a mess.

A HUGE disadvantage to this is that it is very heavy. We purchased this for my mother who is in her 70's and an avid baker but she had to return it because it was too heavy for her to take in and out of the cabinet. For someone who can handle the weight or for those who leave it on their countertop, this is the BEST. Because it is heavy duty it handles large jobs and will last for years.

KitchenAid also has the wonderful ability to add attachments and the mixers they made 10 years ago will accept attachments made today. I love a company that does not create a product that has to be updated to take advantage of new features.
