I bought this for my wife who loves to bake and make confections. She has always used a hand mixer and made do. I think she threw the hand mixer away. This mixer is strong, sturdy and has a relatively small footprint in our average sized kitchen. It's heavy, so it is better if you have room on your counter. I don't think moving this thing from under the counter every time you use it would be a happy time. This machine saves time, and the ingredients are mixed much better, ensuring even better results.

I would liked to have bought the purple one since that's her favorite color. But due to additional costs, I bought a white one to match our kitchen. Relatively quiet and heavy enough not to walk on the countertop when using at full speed. Best price was on Amazon and received very quickly after ordering. I got my Kitchen Aid very quickly, sooner than I expected. It's is beautiful, albeit very heavy. I loved the fact that it came with a recipe book which clarified that because the motor is so powerful some of the mixing times would be shorter than those for a regular mixer. I can't believe how much easier it makes baking. I baked a tart and 2 loaves of bread (all from the recipe book) and they were a) very easy to make, especially the dough and b)delicious. I am still waiting for my free attachment which I ordered via the included rebate. I'm very excited about my purchase. I have only used this mixer a few times. I bought it because I am gluten intolerant and when I use a had mixer to mix gluten free doughs they tend to climb up they beaters making a mess all over the bottom of my mixer unless I stop mixing every couple of seconds to scrape the dough back down...annoying! The dough does not climb up the beater in this stand mixer, and it does not splash out!! The only thing that I would suggest is that you get a few extra bowls and a few extra paddle beaters unless you don't bake that often. Also, if you like to make big batches I would suggest going with a 6 quart.
