I had a 10-yr old Sunbeam MixMaster that bit the dust last Christmas. The KitchenAid mixer line looks nice and is powerful, (& all the TV chefs seem to use them). So I purchased the standard version of this mixer. However, because I found the procedure to lock the mixing bowl into place quite cumbersome and awkward I exchanged it for an Artisan (I never 'used' the Standard, couldn't get the bowl in place properly). While the Artisan's bowl locks into place easier than the Standard, I sometimes must "hug" the unit to do so. I can not UNLOCK the bowl without first turning the mixer 180 degrees and then hugging the entire unit with one arm, and yanking on the bowl to release it. This procedure puts the controls in the back where I can not see them or use them safely. You can not scrape the sides of the bowl while mixing either. You must stop the mixer, lift up the motor and beater mount (no small feat since this mixer is HEAVY), scrape and then reposition everything to continue. This is a VERY clumsy process. I guess you could just leave the stuff that doesn't get mixed into your creation hanging on the side of the bowl, but to do so will ruin most cakes & cookies. Being left handed, I have adapted to the right-handed world in a lot of ways, (I use a right handed scissors even), however, this machine is AWFUL. It was very frustrating trying to purchase online the product referenced in this Review! From the Site, it leads one to believe that the item can be purchased using promotional code "HOHOHOHO" for a $25 discount plus another $30 discount for applying for an Amazon.com credit card. I proceeded through the whole process of signing up for the credit card and attempting to purchase the item, only to find out that it doesn't apply because it is not an item shipped by Amazon.com. Yet all the navigational tools lead one to believe and allow one to proceed as though the discounts will apply...until final check-out -- very disappointing and discouraging, and a waste of my time! I got it with The Mixer Bible cookbook and I recommend it for anyone who owns a stand mixer. It has helped me understand what all the mixer can do and there are tons of great recipes. This stand mixer is the absolute worst mixer anyone could purchase. I purchased this mixer with high expectations only to find myself packing it up to take it back where I purchased it. First of all, it's completely impractical. Did KitchenAid ever think about putting the lever and controls on both sides? Seems to make a lot more sense. Furthermore, you better have a lot of time on your hands to do a lot of scraping. This mixer won't even get the sides. So, every few minutes you have to stop and lift the mixer to scrape it down. Please do not waste your money on this product. The Sunbeam Heritage Series far exceeds the KitchenAid in mixing, function and the motor......KitchenAid is a 375 watt and Sunbeam is 450 watt!!!! I used to buy store bought cookies and ready to bake packages for cookies and cakes, etc. I started watching Marta Stewart's new show MARTHA. She always uses this and most of the time ask her guest if they have one and how fabulous it is, and if they don't have one that they should really get one. So, I finally decided to take Martha's word and went and got the ONYX colored one. I just love it. So far the cookies I have made with it are the best cookies ever. I have made some of the ones that come with the appliance, and some of the ones from Martha's Holiday Cookies magazine, and they came out just perfect and delicious. Please if you don't have one of these, you need to get one, you'll be amazed at the quality of your baking with this appliance. I never thought I could make any cookies completely from scratch, now I will never go back to store bought cookies when I can make them my own and know exactly what went in them.
