Kitchen Aid mixers have been available for so many years, and we tend to forget their older mixers. The tilt-head and bowl-lift models available now are using the very deep and narrow bowls available for the last twenty-five years or so following the demise of their smaller line. The efficiency of the planetary mixing action is good for most items. These machines are relatively inexpensive, good and heavy on a counter, and come in all sorts of interesting colors now. It isn't the best for heavy doughs like bread (the European Bosch and Electrolux mixers are much better). I have eight mixers for different uses, and didn't replace my last K'Aid when it burned out. It remains a good all-round choice for the light duty it'll get in the average kitchen, and the attachments are cheap compared to the competition. I love KitchenAid mixer. I had the classic 4.5 quarts before and had a lot of fun with it. Great for kneading, making scones, etc. So, when I saw the 5 quart model on sale, I jumped at the chance to purchase it. Same as before, but only bigger, right? Well, it worked great until I realized that the dough was being left at the bottom of the bowl. So, I figured it's because of the height so I lowered it a bit. Now, keep in mind that nowhere in the booklet of instruction does it tell you how much the tolerance should be. I went to their live help to get that number which is 1/16". (Another advice: Use paddle attachement for the height measurement. Dough Hook will give you falst reading) So, here I go with lower height setting. I noticed that the top part would twitch everytime it kneaded the dough. After making the dough, I found a ground up spot on the dough hook and scratch marks on the bowl. I had to replace the dough hook but fortunately, the scratch on the bowl was minor enough. So, once again, I'm trying to knead something. I thought I heard some scratching noise again, so I raised the height about a half turn. Next thing I know, I couldn't lock the head in because nothing was lining up anymore. So, here's my recommendation: Get KitchenAid for it's an awesome gadget to have. But... DO NOT TOUCH THE SETTING ONCE YOU BUY IT. I put the paddle attachment and sorta got the 1/16", but it's not the same anymore... That's a shame, though, for such a great tool. I had (have) a "B" series Kitchen Aid circa 1947-50 that works great but was not nice to look at. I recieved my new model Artisan and it is a work of art. It looks great on my counter-top (I used to put the old one away after I was done). As a mixer, nothing compares to Kitchen Aid. I have used it for mashed potatoes, cakes and pizza dough so far and it is awesome. The bowl locks in place, although don't tighten it too much-it really locks!! It is powerful and quiet. You may have to scrape the bottom of the mixing bowl with a rubber spatula to ensure you mix all of the ingredients, but that is with any mixer. And now they come in colors! I highly recommend this mixer and it is a great wedding/house gift. I still have my old one, I'm keeping that one too. It's almost 60 years old!
