This mixer is a classic, and there are some improvements in this model over the one my mom had. First, the color! While the Kitchen Aid orange is paler than the FrancisFrancis! espresso machine, it's a nice orange. Second, the smaller size of the bowl is a big hit with me. The mixer part flips up so you can remove the bowl or add ingredients, making the whole thing easier to use and to clean. The power is amazing.

The first time I used it, I made mashed potatoes. I put three pounds or so of boiled potatoes in there, locked the paddle attachment in place, turned the unit on the lowest speed--I could scarcely turn the thing off quickly enough and I had wonderful mashed potatoes with skins mixed nicely throughout.

There really is no reason to have another mixer than this one unless you need a larger size or are so accustomed to the labors of the hand mixer that you couldn't adapt to flipping a switch and watching the mixing commence.

I got this as a house warming gift and it has been a delight ever since. After nearly a year of making cookies like crazy it shows no signs of giving up, in fact it seems to be getting better with each use. The pouring spout is nice when adding ingredients, otherwise you have to have an impressive aim. It never groans under the pressures of a stiff dough and is easy to clean up. I saved up for this mixer for the last four months. If I had known that I was going to love it as much as I do, I don't think that I would have had the dicipline to wait to purchase it. I made up a batch of icing today that normaly takes at least 10 minutes to mix with a hand held mixer. (I have even burned out the motor on a hand held making this.) No kidding, my icing was mixed, fluffy and ready to spread in 30 seconds!!! I will never use another mixer. I would give it 10 stars if I could. FYI - If you plan to buy this mixer, and have the patience, watch for sales and rebates. She called the US KitchenAid number, who said they could not help her and gave her the KitchenAid number for Canada. When she called them, besides being rude, they were unhelpful. They also said that the warranty was void as soon as the product left the US.
