I got this mixer because I wanted to make pasta from scratch. You can buy extra attachments that will allow you to make alot of different things, including: pasta, sausage, ground meat, etc. This is a heavy mixer, so it might not be a good gift for your grandma who can barely walk (unless she's from Lake Woebegone). It's weight is what allows it to mix up the toughest foods without your having to hold it down, like so many cheap mixers out there. The construction of the mixer seems a little less sturdy than what I would have liked--there appears to be some play in the motor head while mixing. There are two types: ones that swing-up from the bowl, like this one, and ones that raise and lower the bowl. The sturdier design is most likely the latter. I suggest that model.
