I got this mixer because I wanted to make pasta from scratch. You can buy extra attachments that will allow you to make alot of different things, including: pasta, sausage, ground meat, etc. This is a heavy mixer, so it might not be a good gift for your grandma who can barely walk (unless she's from Lake Woebegone). It's weight is what allows it to mix up the toughest foods without your having to hold it down, like so many cheap mixers out there. The construction of the mixer seems a little less sturdy than what I would have liked--there appears to be some play in the motor head while mixing. There are two types: ones that swing-up from the bowl, like this one, and ones that raise and lower the bowl. The sturdier design is most likely the latter. I suggest that model. I've had my KA Artisan for about a year now. In that time I've put it to work a great deal. I've typically baked with it and I think it preforms very well for that function. It goes without saying that it beats the life out of a hand mixer. Heavy doughs and double recipes seem to be no problem for this mixer. A few months ago I got the pasta roller and the food grinder. Both of these attachments have been great. I was given The Mixer Bible as a gift and I love that too. I use it a lot with my new attachments (great for pasta recipes), but it also has a great deal of recipes for just the regular attachments.
Because I love my mixer and attachments so much, I went out and got the pasta maker attachment(supposed to work like an extruder), and have had no luck at all working with that one (no wonder the book doesn't have any recipes for that attachment). It just doesn't work at all.

I LOVE this mixer! For years I had a sunbeam stand mixer that did a good job...I thought. Until I got this mixer, I had no idea how neat they are! I always thought they were overpriced, but I have really enjoyed using it. I haven't had any trouble with it as far as the ingredients not being thoroughly mixed at the bottom as some I've read about here. I like how fast it mixes things like cookie dough.
