I have never been an avid baker but after making a cake completely from scratch for my husband's birthday using my old hand mixer I realized that it was worthless. I decided to take the plunge and purchase this mixer and have absolutely no regrets. Now I bake something new on a weekly basis and LOVE making bread, rolls, cakes, etc. from scratch. The dough hook does all the work for you and makes bread making enjoyable and it doesn't take nearly as long. Very well made machine. First off let me say that all KitchenAide mixers I have been around are head and shoulders above the rest but there are a few things you need to look for. This model gives you a larger motor than several of the department store look-alike models. Compare the wattage carefully and don't go just on price and looks. My personal preference is for the tilt head model. There is also a model that raises the bowl instead of the tilt head but to me these are awkward to use.
