This machine would get 4 or 5 stars if it didn't break within a week or two of use.

I purchased the Artisan for Christmas 2005. It failed (gears froze) a week after receiving it. The replacement unit failed on it's second use. I am now awaiting my third replacement.

Kitchenaid sends a replacement in 5 days and picks up the failed unit. That is good customer service. However, each unit has failed within short time, if the third one fails, I will request my money back and purchase a different brand.

Update March 2008: The third mixer was the charm. It's been working perfectly. Sorry to be so late getting back on this.

Update Sept 2009: The third mixer is starting to act up. The stirring blade is bumping the side of the bowl. You can see the mechanism is not spinning properly any longer. Only a little over a year and now it needs repair. No quality here. When it works, it's wonderful. I have really enjoyed using my new mixer. It works great! I have trouble with my shoulder mixing things like cookies and kneading bread dough so this machine does it all for me. I have already made bread, many batches of cookies and a cake with my new Artisan and love the trouble it saves me mixing everthing by hand. I put off buying this for so long, telling myself that I would not use it very often. Finally, my husband ended up buying it for me. I know it sounds like a cliche, but I don't know how I got along without it! The only problem I had was the beater not reaching all of the ingredients, but a little adjustment to the screw under the pivot and that was taken care of (see instructions). It's a well built food mixer for home use. the only concern that i have with the product is the guard shield. it's very flimsy and it'll often time fall into my batter when i take it off. and the mixer piece keeps hitting it whenever i lift the head up. dispite leaving it off, it's a necessity when you're trying to mix flower. other than that, the mixer really mixes really well. quality construction i would say. I got this mixer because I wanted to make pasta from scratch. You can buy extra attachments that will allow you to make alot of different things, including: pasta, sausage, ground meat, etc. This is a heavy mixer, so it might not be a good gift for your grandma who can barely walk (unless she's from Lake Woebegone). It's weight is what allows it to mix up the toughest foods without your having to hold it down, like so many cheap mixers out there. The construction of the mixer seems a little less sturdy than what I would have liked--there appears to be some play in the motor head while mixing. There are two types: ones that swing-up from the bowl, like this one, and ones that raise and lower the bowl. The sturdier design is most likely the latter. I suggest that model.
