A KitchenAid mixer is a must have in the kitchen and I was looking forward to finally adding it to my own. But I was surprised when the box arrived and it was shipped by amazon in the KitchenAid box, no external box, no additional packaging, just the box that you would find on a shelf in a store. After one use, the metal peg that attaches the mixer top to the base came out almost entirely. I had to hammer it back into the base. This, I've been told by other KitchenAid owners, should not* happen.

Also, the new bowls have a lift at the bottom (a little tent-like protrusion that makes the beater and the bowl meet). This is probably designed to make sure that your batter gets fully mixed. The problem with the design is that it makes the machine rattle and move up and down (even when in the lock position) when you add anything to the batter other than flour and eggs. So, for instance, the chocolate chip cookies I make seem to really give the mixer trouble. My mother's mixer--decades old--seems to be a better buy than this one. Perhaps mines is anomolous, but I was unhappy with how Amazon shipped it and have not been completely happy with its performance. I bought a Sunbeam Heritage stand mixer and was appalled at what poor quality it was. I lost all respect for Sunbeam manufacture.

The Kitchenaid is obviously much better quality, but I'm put off at its design. I suspect that much of the hype about Kitchenaid relates to its fancy design and attractive appearance (designer colors etc.). On a practical level it hasn't measured up.

For instance: the beaters don't pull up enough of the cooking material. Scraping the bowl is much more awkward with Kitchenaid than with old fashioned wide, spinning bowls. One has to stop the motor, unlock the head, lift it up, detach the bowl, angle it out and then scrape. Afterwards reverse the process to get back to the beating. Interesting though the beater design is, it often doesn't do as good a mixing as the old variety.
The bowl is tall, which for when whipping cream or egg whites is desirable, but it's rather a tight fit to the machine making it difficult to add ingredients to. The plastic device that is supposed to be used for adding ingredients can't satisfactorily be used for certain things, like adding boiled sugar to whipped egg whites.

The mixer was not packed properly - there was no outside box and there was a large hole in the box it came in. A replacement was to have been sent, which I never received. I returned the mixer for a full credit refund. (I have been told to expect a full refund.) I have always had good luck with ordering books and music from Amazon, but I will never again order other types of products.
